How would you get a small dog to get over the fear of large objects in general? I have 2 small dogs, and they are scared of anything large, even just a ballon.

I just got a new rescue Red Heeler and she’s very scared of the bathroom. We’ve been using your technique and she can now come all the way in and put her nose on the side of the bathtub. Hopefully in the next couple weeks or so we can give her the bath she desperately needs 🙂

@moomaddy Clicker training works on everything from dogs to elephants to hermit crabs to fish to, yes, cats. 🙂

A big THANK YOU for this video! My dog is super scared of slippery floors as well and I have really tried everything to get him to relax. It hasn’t exactly been easy, but I will certanly try this method to build his confidence to the slippery floor.

I know this is REALLY old, but I don’t know if your question was answered or not.

Emily has taught her dogs how to “Settle” even when she’s working with another dog. As the owner of two dogs, dogs also know when the click (or “Yes”) is for them. They are quite smart!

    you are an expert!!!

Nice video! Love how you place your food for position or movement depending on what you want!

The only thing is isn’t counter conditioning (that’s a type of respondent conditioning). This is operant conditioning because the consequence, the click and treat, is what is changing the behavior.

Love your videos though, they’re great!

Do you have any tips on how to break in my puppy being in the car? He gets really nervous and drooly. I’ve tried spending time with him in it and feeding him in it and tried to treat him as we drive around.

What if my dog is afraid of training in general and shuts down before can even start. I just got him from an abusive home.

This kind of clip is why my spouse and I check out Youtube. I waste a cart load of time by doing this.

But the large majority of folks are bit by bit KILLING their family dogs – without knowing it. The garbage they put in pet food generates many forms of cancer and tends to make dogs pass away young. I came to understand the challenging way when my doggy passed away aged 6. To preserve your dog’s life you should look at Double Life Dog Diet (Use Google.)

my chihuahua is afraid of the leash which is making potty training really difficult. she backs away when i try to put it on her, and then she gets really cautious of me petting her after that.

My dog is afraid of men, even though that’s sounds really weird

    @JDurbie
Muffle the clicker or start with a pen to make the clicking noise 🙂

  20. Ryan Kleeberger

@jdurbie You can also use a different marker than the clicker. Instead of the clicker, just say “YES!” in an enthusiastic/praising tone.

I think you’re awesome and love your videos. You’ve taught me so much, so thank you. I have a new puppy and he’s super afraid of stairs. When we’re walking and he first sees stairs he stops dead in his tracks. After “let’s go” and happy voice he’ll eventually go up the stairs, but at an angle (in front of me) and jets up super fast. I’ve tried feeding him on stairs and praising him and giving treats on the stairs. I’m pretty sure I’m doing it wrong, because we’re not making progress. Help!

What if the dog is so scared that don’t want to eat the food?

  28. Melanie Hansen

Thank you for this. My service dog in training developed a weird floor thing and I don’t know which floors will cause it. Having a tool like this available will be priceless as we start our public access training. In a few short minutes, I can get her comfortable on a floor so that we can move on to what we were actually going to train. I’m very excited to try this.
